International roaming vs. eSIM costs
We compared carrier day passes against travel eSIMs across twelve routes. The gap is enormous.
Carrier roaming is sold in day passes or per-megabyte rates. Travel eSIMs are sold in data buckets. On any trip longer than about three days, the bucket wins.
The maths
A typical day pass costs the same as a mid-size travel eSIM plan that lasts a month. On a two-week trip, that is one charge versus fourteen.
Per-megabyte roaming is worse again, and it is the default the moment a day pass lapses.
When roaming still makes sense
If you need your home number to receive voice calls on a legacy network, or your trip is a single overnight, a day pass can be simpler. Otherwise install an eSIM.
