When to install and activate a travel eSIM
Install at home on wifi. Activate on arrival. Here is why the order matters.
Installing a profile requires an internet connection. Activating it usually starts your validity clock. Those two facts drive the whole timing question.
Install before you fly
Scan the QR code at home on wifi, a day or two before departure. The profile sits dormant on your phone until you switch it on.
Activate on arrival
Turn on data roaming for the travel profile once you land. Most plans start counting validity from first network connection, so activating early wastes days.
Keep your home line for messages
Leave your primary SIM enabled for calls and SMS but turn its data roaming off, and set the travel eSIM as your data line. You keep your number for verification codes without a roaming bill.
