How to know whether your phone supports eSIM

A 30-second check on iPhone and Android, plus the carrier-lock trap that catches people out.

How to know whether your phone supports eSIM

Two things must be true: your phone has eSIM hardware, and it is not carrier-locked.

iPhone

Open Settings › General › About and scroll to the bottom. If you see an EID number, your iPhone supports eSIM. iPhone XS, XR and every model since supports it; US iPhone 14 and later are eSIM-only.

Android

Open Settings › About phone › Status and look for an EID entry, or dial *#06# and check whether an EID appears alongside the IMEI. Pixel 3 and later, Galaxy S20 and later, and most recent flagships support eSIM.

Carrier lock

A phone bought on contract may be locked to the carrier that sold it, which blocks any other profile — physical or digital. Ask your carrier to unlock it before you travel; it is usually free once the device is paid off.
